Hypnagogic State, Visions, Insights and Lucid Dreaming

Hypnagogic States

Hypnagogic states, say what?  Hypnagogic might sound like a weird gag reflex or some medical issue that you want to avoid, but it’s actually a phenomenon that happens during the onset of sleep.  In this state, also referred to as hypnagogia, visions, insights, and sensations can be experienced, manipulated, and bring about lucid dreaming.  It happens in that borderline place between the sleep and the awake.

You Have Experienced Hypnagogia

You have undoubtedly experienced a hypnagogic state while falling asleep in the past.  It can happen by bringing about visions of familiar faces, geometric shapes or forms, landscapes, or anything that has a hypnotic or trance like effect.  These effects would be hypnotic on their own, but in this in-between place they are even more so.  As you develop your skills you can start to manipulate these visions and even use them to help you step into a lucid dream.

Relaxed Wakefulness and Meditation

The hypnagogic state of sleep has been linked to the NREM sleep pattern, also called the pre-sleep state.  This pre-sleep state is considered a relaxed wakefulness.  Since relaxed wakefulness can be connected to the hypnagogic state this means that you can also get into this state through a meditation practice.  Meditation leads to relaxed wakefulness, and relaxed wakefulness lead to hypnagogic states, which then lead to lucid dreaming.  Did you follow that ok?

Basically a regular meditation practice can help you to lucid dream.

As you develop your own lucid dreaming skills you can use hypnagogia to help you shift into a lucid dreaming state more easily.  And there are techniques to help you learn to do this more easily.  The most common process is called the WILD technique, which stands for Wake Induced Lucid Dreams.  The WILD technique can be difficult at first, but with practice it becomes easier and easier.

WILD (Wake Initiated Lucid Dream)

There are ways to make the WILD technique work more easily for you.  One tip is to try to use the hypnagogic process during an afternoon nap which at the very least, will allow you to use the Wake Back To Bed Technique (my favorite).  Many lucid dreamers who work with this method believe that afternoon naps are more effective for lucid dreaming and they are right on.  You are using two of the best techniques to become lucid.  It is also recommend attempting this process when you only had four to seven hours of sleep the night before but this isn’t a requirement.  You can pull this method off just by taking a nap… isn’t that great news?

To help bring about hypnagogia get relaxed and then start to picture yourself walking down a flight of stairs or walking up a flight of stairs.  You can also try counting your breaths and flowing their pattern which is what I personally use.  No matter what allow yourself to stay calm and stay focused.  Tip: If you have trouble concentrating put in some very light classical music and turn the volume down so you can barely hear it.
