How To Make Your Lucid Dream Last Longer

In the previous posts I laid out a lot of information that need to begin inducing lucid dreams.  Depending on how fast you worked through all of the information you may have already had a few lucid dreams.  If you have not experienced one yet, do not get disappointed; just continue to practice and devote time to the techniques.

Your first couple lucid dreams will be short and may only last seconds or minutes.  I’m sure you are wondering why in the world they end so soon and how you can make them last longer.

Beginners Mistakes

The reason your first lucid dreams are short is because of the sheer excitement of becoming conscious in your dream.  The excitement alone is enough to end your lucid dream prematurely but there is also another reason for your dreams ending so quickly.  You are in an entirely different world of dreaming, one that you are not use to experiencing and like any new environment, it takes time getting comfortable and settling in.  Luckily there are some things you can do to speed up the process and remain lucid.

Relax- the next time you find yourself lucid in your dreams keep your excitement to a minimum and do not immediately try to fly or control the dream.  Stay calm and slowly explore the dreamscape.

Stimulate Your Conscious Mind- Many beginners get sucked back into a regular non-lucid dream because they lose conscious awareness.  If this happened to you then you need to do simple arithmetic.  Add 10+10 and you will stimulate your conscious brain into remaining active in the dream world.

Rub Your Hands Together- This also stimulates your conscious mind and will allow you to remain consciously aware in the dream.  It also helps in preventing you from waking up prematurely after realizing you are dreaming.

Look Away- When your dream begins to change into a different scene, turn around and do not attempt to watch it happen.  Watching dream scenes change stimulates your mind far too much to remain asleep.  I know it can be tempting to watch it happen but it will awaken you almost every time and cause a lot of frustration.

Repeat Your Mantra- Anytime you feel you are losing awareness repeat to yourself “I am dreaming, I am dreaming, I am dreaming” and then perform a reality check to reaffirm your intent of awareness.

Postpone Dream Sex and Flying- Everyone wants to fly and have sex with the hottest person they can think of or even the one that got away.  Do yourself a favor and postpone these two fantasies until you have 5 or 10 lucid dreams under your belt.  Talk about too much excitement… these two activities will cause far too much excitement for you to remain asleep.  Even though I do not encourage you to do this, you probably will anyway, heck I know I would!  Just know you will continue to wake yourself up until you get use to the feeling of being aware in your dreams.
